About
MY BACKGROUND
Hello there!
I'm Tabassum, and I'd like to tell you a bit about myself. I earned my B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology in Bangladesh. I was ranked 29th out of 140 students in the Fall 2017 Graduating Batch.
During my time in school, I discovered a passion for research and had the opportunity to publish two academic conference papers. One of my projects were "Low-cost Aquatic Spilled Oil & Petroleum Collector." This machine is designed to be simple, inexpensive, and effective in collecting floating oil, especially gasoline and heavy oil, that has spilled over the water surface due to marine transports or accidents. I was inspired to work on this project after witnessing a devastating oil tanker accident in the Sundarbans that caused a massive spill of heavy oil in the marine environment. I hope that this simple machine can help low and middle-income countries to prevent similar ecological disasters in the future.
In 2020, I enrolled in the Integrated Water Management program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), which is known for its excellence in technical education. I also served as the website manager for the SAIT Student Water Club (SSWC), where I led a team in developing the club's website. I was honoured to receive both the "Jason Lang Scholarship" and the "Women in STEM Scholarship" for the 2021-2022 academic year from The Government of Alberta.
Currently, I am pursuing my MASc in Environmental Engineering at Carleton University's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. I am focusing on Urban Stormwater Management in the Drake Stormwater Research Group.
During my earlier academic years, I attended Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, an esteemed educational institution in Bangladesh. I actively participated in sports and other extracurricular activities, winning numerous championship titles in various inter and intra-district school competitions. Furthermore, I enjoyed writing Bangla literature and had some of my works published in the bi-yearly school magazine "Noon Probaho" between 2001 and 2013. My passion for science and research led me to participate in various science fairs and receive awards from several institutions.
